The South Street Seaport has a special treat this summer. The popular Greenwich Village gelateria Amorino has launched its own Italian version of the ice cream truck. They have taken a 1960s model Italian Vespa Ape (pronounced ah-peh and Italian for bee) and parked it in the South Street Seaport at the corner of Fulton and Front Streets through the end of September from noon to midnight, selling their delicious gelato to anyone and everyone in the area.

In June of 2011, Cristiano Sereni and Paulo Benassi, the founders of Amorino, opened the first Amorino gelateria in New York on the corner of University Place in Green Village. Filippo Saccani, US spokesman for the brand, said that he had been living in America for six years and noticed a lack of gelaterias. Having grown up in a family that was in the gelato business, Saccani wanted to change that and started working with Sereni and Benassi as they were starting to look to expand into the US Market (Amorino has over 75 locations across Europe). Since that opening, there has been a steady line of gelato enthusiasts queuing up at Amorino. All of Amornio’s gelato is made in their Paris facility where they are able to have complete quality control over all their products.

The South Street Seaport cart offers 10 of their 24 flavors, and the cones are made in the shape of a flower—the signature of Amorino. You can choose as many flavors as you would like and watch as your very own flower is molded by the incredibly talented team at Amorino.
